Another Céspedes on His Way

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

His name is Yoelkis Céspedes,he is 22 years old, half brother of ex-A’S,Red Sox,Tigers,Mets outfielder Yoenis Céspedes. Just like his older brother. Yoelkis plays the outfield. He is working out in the Bahamas 4 to 6 hours a day and hope to have a showcase coming in Arizona and Florida this March.

The younger Céspedes defected in June last year from the Cuban National Team that was in Canton,Ohio participating in the Cam-Am showcase. His debut was in 2015 when he hit .283 with 14 home-runs and stole 16 bases in 26 attempts. Participated in the WBC(World Baseball Classic)for Cuba, with Victor Victor Mesa and hit .250. Mesa was signed in 2019 by the Marlins.

Yoelkis Céspedes from the Gramna province of Cuba has been scouted for years, considered a five-tool player, faster and more athletic than his brother Yoenis, but with lower potential for home run power, remains a big international prospect.

“Es un orgullo que me comparen con mi hermano” -trans: “It’s a pride to be compared to my brother” said the young Yoelkis. It is unknown if he(like his brother)will release a video of his talents. Yoenis Céspedes began his career with the Oakland Athletics in 2012 and played for the Green and Gold until 2014 when the very popular left fielder was traded to the Boston Red Sox, since then he has played for two more teams, however he missed all of the 2019 season and could miss the entire 2020 season, his status(officially by the Mets) is unknown.

Suffered multiple ankle fractures in May 2019 at his ranch in Boca Ratón,Florida, during a non-baseball activity. During his seven year career Yoenis is a .274 hitter with 163 home-runs and 524 runs batted-in. One of the best and most accurate arms from left field in the game.

As far as Yoelkis Céspedes. Teams are lining-up and their scouts are anxious to see the youngest Céspedes. It could be very soon. The waiting game is on.

We might as well go to “baseball school”so we can learn more of the new rules.slowly but surely the National Pastime continue to go through a series of changes. These are the categories that will go into effect this 2020 season. For all fans pleasure and entertainment, here they are.

1-The Three-batter minimum. For all intent and purposes, this is “the one”.
All pitchers, starters and relievers now have to face at least three batters (or pitch until the inning is over) before they come out of a game. The only exception is an injury or illness that prevents the pitcher from being able to finish his three batters. Main effect of this rule will be on the specialist relievers (the ones used to face one batter for a favorable match-up) the perennial lefty coming out of the bullpen just to get a lefty out.

That is gone, there will be none of this beginning this season. Also could impact teams that use the “openers”, who are usually starters that are used just to pitch the first inning of a game. These “openers” are pitchers that start the game to match up specifically against the top of the opposing order. Starting this season an opener will have to face at least three batters even if he had a bad match-up in that start, –This three-batter rule is already on effect this current Spring Training Roster Limits.

2-Roster Limits: 26 man rosters.Teams active rosters are being increased from 25 to 26 players for the regular season (through August 31) and during postseason. Teams are limited to carrying a maximum of 13 pitchers.

3-Smaller Rosters in September:MLB is adjusting the size of September rosters to 28 players, including a maximum of 14 pitchers.

4-Two-way Player Designation: Totally new. A “two way player” somebody who can both hit and pitch, like Angels Shohei Otani or Reds Michael Lorenzen, who appears as a reliever and also plays the outfield.. The “two way player” has not been seen in MLB since the days of the legendary Babe Ruth*,the most famous of all “two way players”. This rule will let these players stay on the roster as a position player and pitch in games without counting their team 13 pitchers limit. If you designate someone as a “two way player” they have to stay that way through the end of the year.
*When Babe Ruth played in the 1910’s and 1920’s it took 1 hour and 51 minute on an average to complete a game.

5-Position Players Pitching:Position players are allowed to pitch only if a game goes to extra innings,or If their team is winning or loosing by more than six runs.During normal circumstances in a nine-inning game only the teams 13 designated pitchers (or two way players) are allowed to pitch.

6-The 27th man: What used to be the 26th man is now the 27th man, thanks to the new 26 man roster size.

7-Injured List and Option Periods: Pitchers and two-way players are returning to a 15-day injured list. That is once they are placed on the IL, they cannot be reinstated for 15 days. The IL (injured list) used to be 15 days for all players until the 2017 season, when it was reduced to 10 days. Position players will still have a 10 day IL under the new rules. Also, pitchers who are optioned to the Minor Leagues now have to remain there for 15 days rather than 10. The option period for position players remains at 10 days.

8-Challenge time: Managers now have 20 seconds to decide to challenge a play instead of 30.

MLB: Nuevas reglas para temporada 2020

Amaury Noticias y Comentarios

Houston Astros: Apologizes, but Action would be better

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

On their first day of Spring Training the Houston Astros gave a press conference where owner Jim Crane, new manager Dusty Baker and players José Altuve and Alex Bregman were present. It was a Mea Culpa for the sins of stealing signs.

We had a great team meeting last night,” Altuve’s statement read. “I want to say that the whole Astros organization and the team feel bad about what happened in 2017. We especially feel remorse for the impact on our fans and the game of baseball. Our team is determined to move forward, to play with intensity and to bring back a championship to Houston in 2020.”

This is all well and done, everybody was expecting an apology and admission of wrong doing. A better idea was suggested by a good friend of mine who recently wrote a letter to the Houston team. This is what my friend wrote: “How about the Houston Astros players donate all the money they made cheating in the playoffs and in the World Series to St Jude hospital and Williamsport little league?

Probably that will help a little bit”. That is the best idea I have heard. The Astros players would not have to file for bankruptcy if they did this. it would be a huge move for their name sake as well as their employers, but most important they will be donating to a great cause. But that, obviously would have to come from the players hearts.

Sacramento based McClatchy Newspapers files for bankruptcy

The Demise of Print Media continues as McClatchy Co, Filed for Bankruptcy. They operated 20 daily newspapers in fourteen states This will end family control of America;s second largest local news company. Another punch in the gut to independent journalism.

By filing they hope to shed much of its pension obligations and about 55 percent of it’s debts would be eliminated as they now try to reposition for a digital future. Translation: Social Media claims another news print victim.

The publisher’s origins date to 1857 when it first began publishing a four-page paper in Sacramento, California, following the California Gold Rush. That paper became The Sacramento Bee. The Miami Herald,Kansas City Stars and dozens of newspaper who covered Major League Baseball as well as other sports are part of McClatchy. Many more jobs in journalism are being eliminated these days, courtesy of Silicon Valley.

#1 The San Francisco Giants were one of the teams that were expressing interest in acquiring former Los Angeles Dodger Yaseil Puig but no more. Puig commands a seven year worth $42 million deal. The Giants have said they are no longer interested in obtaining Puig. Was it his unpopularity with his teammates with past teams the issue or the cost of his contract demands?

#2 It was a big deal at Giants fan fest when Hunter Pence sat on stage with an untucked Giants jersey on and was happy to be back in San Francisco again

#3 Pence signed for a one year deal worth $3 million is Hunter’s value mostly in the clubhouse or what he can bring to the plate he did get some big flies when he did play in Texas last season

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: Pete Rose How do you like me now?

washingtonpost.com file photo circa 1989: Former Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose is questioned over betting on baseball in the Reds dugout before a game in 1989 at Riverfront Stadium

Pete Rose: How do You Like me Now?

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Amid the controversy over the sign-stealing scandal, which followed the steroids-era,it is fair to say that Peter Edward Rose, also known as “Charlie Hustle”, Pete Rose, who played in Major League Baseball from 1963 to 1986, might be “looking good” today. Rose hit 4,256 hits more than any other player. He gambled but only on his own team winning as a manager. Ty Cobb ended second in hits with 4,191 and nobody alive today is close to 4,000 hits.

The question today: Is it time to let Pete Rose into Cooperstown? I believe so. I know baseball ultimate sin is gambling, and there are lots of degenerate gamblers all over, many go to Las Vegas to bet on baseball games, but nobody has 4,256 hits. Charlie Hustle was always on base, played for 24 Years (10 of those years 200 plus hits) 3,562 Games,15,890 Plate Appearances,14,053 at Bats. Only one season he struck out over 100 times. Total strike outs for Rose in those 24 seasons:1,143. This strike out category is very similar to Ted Williams and Joe Dimaggio, two of the greatest pure hitters in history. I will render my verdict at the end, the way I see it as if I was a juror.

Twenty-nine years have gone-by since 1991 when the Baseball Hall of Fame formally voted to ban those “permanently ineligible” list from induction. Those players were previously excluded by informal agreement among voters. Pete Rose admitted in 2004 that he bet on baseball and on the Reds. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and Major League Baseball are two different entities. However (as of today) the Hall of Fame states that no one on Major League Baseball’s ineligible list can be inducted into Cooperstown. So this means Pete Rose is out.

Hypocrisy? MLB has changed their attitude toward gambling. On November 27,2018 they announced that MGM had become its “official gaming partner”. I know people that bet on different legal sites in the US, the Fantasy Draft attracts a lot of sports betting fans, they have fantasy players on their list and is very popular, specially with the younger crowd of fans. And isn’t that what MLB wants? To bring young people back to baseball?

If it sounds confusing, mixed signals. It is. At the end is baseball that will have to deal with this, with the changes in the culture we live in. I do not have the answer. That is for the “moral philosophers” out there that examine the nature of ethics and foundation of good and back character in our society. Not to mention we are now in the robotic era and social media.

One last question, before my verdict. What stops somebody that stole signs from betting on those games they knew they had the edge?

My verdict: Put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame, as a player and put an asterisk on his plaque as a manager. And stop fooling yourselves.

Hasta la Vista!

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Ozzie Guillen wants to manage again

file photo from WBEZ 91.5 FM: Miami Marlins former manager Ozzie Gullien trying to explain himself to the media why he said he loved Fidel Castro back in 2012 which forced him out of baseball

Ozzie Guillén Wants to Manage again

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Ozzie Guillén, born in Venezuela, was the first Latino-born manager to win a World Series as skipper of the Chicago White Sox when his team swept the Houston Astros in the 2005 World Series. Since then, Alex Cora, born in Puerto Rico managed the Boston Red Sox to a World Series title in 2018 over the Los Angeles Dodgers, becoming the second Latino manager to win the Fall Classic. Guillén is said to be looking for a job and return to the major leagues as a manager.

Guillén was also a very colorful player,a shortstop for 16 years with the White Sox,Orioles,Braves and Rays. Later he was a coach for the Expos and Marlins prior to managing the Chicago White Sox from 2004 to 2011. As a manager he posted a .513 winning percentage. Not short of controversy during his career. Always opinionated,he loves to talk, when he played and managed as he always had time for me and for an interview, I could roll tape forever, and many a times,I had to edit his interviews to make sure they fit the time I have on the broadcast.

In 2012 he told Time Magazine, “I love Fidel Castro” and that started a storm in Miami,a heavily Cuban populated city, Cubans who left their country because of Castro’s communist dictatorship. Later the Marlins issue a statement denouncing the Cuban dictator. Guillén was suspended five games and the fallout resulted with his ouster after the season. Marlins management at that time reported that attendance fell after those remarks and never recovered.

Jorge Ortíz, who was a writer for the US Today in 2012 called me and asked me about my opinion about what Guillén said, since I am Cuban-born and a broadcaster in the major leagues, below is part of his article:

“It’s like going to New York’s Jewish district and saying, ‘Hitler wasn’t so bad. He managed to stay in power for a few years,’ ” said veteran Spanish-language baseball announcer Amaury Pi-Gonzalez, who fled Cuba at age 17 and lived in Miami for five years. “Even a 9-year-old knows better than to say that in Miami. But I don’t think he’s really a fan of Castro or meant any harm. It’s just that he talks so much that sometimes he says things without thinking about them.”

I still feel the same way for Ozzie, a good man and a very good manager,I defended him then because here in the US we have the right to free speech, something that -by the way-still absent in Cuba for over six decades.

Ozzie GuilIén has not managed in the major leagues since 2012,he has been doing some television work and has kept-up with the game On February 2019 Guillén said “I want to manage again.“I know the game,I’m still close to it, so I see the game unfold. I watch the games now doing television and I’m still involved managing through the Venezuela Winter League.”

If not this season,I think we can expect the possibility of Guillén managing again,he would not mind going into the minor leagues to get the shot at managing again in the show. Talking with a lot of baseball fans, and recently during the Oakland Athletics Fanfest a couple of Venezuelan fans that know Guillén told me that he – Guillén (for sure) is still interested in the opportunity.
