Raiders overcome tough start, get 31-28 win over Dolphins now 3-0

By Rich Perez

Las Vegas Raiders beat writer Sports Radio Service

LAS VEGAS- The Raiders overcame a bad start and came out victorious in a tough game with the Miami Dolphins.

John Gruden had to be frustrated in the first half after Miami took a commanding lead in the ball game.

Derek Carr unceremoniously threw an interception while falling backwards that led to a Miami touchdown by the linebackers rolling down the field, Uncontested.

The second half had the Raiders really brewing up a comeback by coming out of a half wanting to seek and destroy a new game attitude, knowing they were at home , knowing that they were up against a second string quarterback in Jacoby Brissett.

Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards ,the dynamic duo with the Raiders ,have really been shining the last few weeks and they did just that again on Sunday. Both helped the Raiders on key drives to secure the victory.

RB Corp of Kenyan Drake and Payton Barber also did well in covering for Josh Jacobs who was out with a toe injury.

The Raiders also added a Dolphins safety as the first of the year for the team.

Next up the Raiders face a very strong challenge with the Los Angeles Chargers in So Cal. Suddenly the Chargers have become a strong contender in the west with new 2nd year quarterback Herbert at the helm and a key win in KC.

#1 Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu has been put on the Covid 19 list after testing positive. In what some call a breakthrough case Mathieu had been vaccinated. While the Chiefs have three other safeties at their disposal Mathieu has 24 hours to test asymptomatic twice within that period to be eligible for Sun Sep 12 game against the Cleveland Browns.

#2 Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard said that everybody should get vaccinated. Ballard talked about his players who are not vaccinated. Quarterback Carson Wentz, center Ryan Kelly, and receiver Zach Pascal came into a Colts staff member who was positive and all three have been place on the Covid 19 list.

#3 Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has received the confidence of Dolphins head coach Brian Flores. Tagovailoa has been floated as a possible trade to the Houston Texans and has said he does appreciate the support from Flores.

#4 Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Marcus Moriota is set to receive $10 million this season just to sit on the bench as a back up behind starter Derek Carr. Moriota could have got a deal worth up to $20 million plus incentives but will stay in Vegas as no other team is will to pay that price and the Raiders would like to wait to restructure Moriota’s contract.

#5 The San Francisco 49ers quarterback situation has been the all the talk as head coach Kyle Shanahan plans to start quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and insert back up Trey Lance in mid series plays. It did throw the Raiders off in last Sunday’s pre season game it could do the same in the regular season.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Barbara Mason: Raiders working on avoiding turnovers; more scoring as they meet Denver this Sunday

The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) and the Raiders will be practicing holding onto the ball all week as they prepare for the Denver Broncos for Sun Jan 3, 2021’s game at Empower Field in Denver ( file photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Barbara Mason:

#1 Narrow game the Miami Dolphins come out ahead of the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday night’s game 26-25. The loss drops the Raiders from making the post season.

#2 The Raiders held a 13-6 first half lead but Raiders quarterback Derek Carr just couldn’t execute the Raiders offense in the red zone.

#3 Considering that Carr was supposed to be out ten to 14 weeks but started the game on Saturday and played the Dolphins defense to a close second half as well 20-12 but couldn’t get anymore on the scoreboard than they could would you consider Carr’s staying in the game miraculous within itself?

#4 Carr threw for 336 yards and a touchdown, considering the groin injury he was coming off playing that close of a game against the Dolphins spoke volumes about Carr’s drive to win this game.

#5 The Raiders go up next against the Denver Broncos this Sun Jan 3rd to ring in the New Year. The Broncos are coming off a 19-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday. The Broncos have lost three of their last four games. This is the Raiders last game of the season how do you see this match up this Sunday.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Superbowl Wayne: Carr miracle come back starts game against Dolphins

The Las Vegas Raiders Derek Carr (4) drops back to throw against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sep 23, 2018. Carr got to start against Miami after being listed as injured for 10-14 weeks in today’s game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas Sat Dec 26, 2020.  ( file photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Superbowl Wayne:

#1 When Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and the Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa started against each other on Saturday at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas it was a surprise come back of sorts for Carr who was expected to be out some ten to 14 weeks.

#2 At St Louis High School in Honolulu Raider back up quarterback Marcus Mariota mentored Tua as a fourth grade quarterback while he was throwing with the high school kids.

#3 Tua said he never forgot the opportunity that Mariota allowed him as a fourth grader to come throw with the high school players it’s a memory Tua won’t forget and said Mariota  is a humble guy and a hard worker.

#4 Superbowl your from Honolulu and your familiar with St Louis school in Honolulu it’s a special place for Mariota and Tua with long football ties to their early days there. They nearly opposed each other tonight for Sunday Night Football but Carr was feeling a lot better it would have been the first time two quarterbacks would have met from Hawaii had Mariota and Tua if they were to have started against each other.

#5 The Dolphins come in at 9-5 and the Raiders 7-7. The Raiders are coming of a tough Thursday Night Football loss to the Los Angeles Chargers 30-27 and the Dolphins are coming off a big win over the New England Patriots 22-12 last Sunday set this game up for us.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Barbara Mason: Raiders prepare to go up against Tagovailoa and Dolphins Saturday night

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (1) tries to avoid the clutches of New England Patriots linebacker Josh Uche (53) on Sun Dec 13, 2020 in Miami (USA Today photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Barbara:

#1 The Raiders have lost four of their last five games and still maintain second in the AFC West is there still any daylight for the Raiders to make post season?

#2 In the last game against the Los Angeles Chargers the Raiders just couldn’t hang and and the Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on the final play during overtime reached over the goal line to get six points for a Chargers win 30-27.

#3 The Raiders had little turnaround time as previous to their Thursday Night Football game against the Chargers they had just played the Indianapolis Colts on Sun Dec 13th another game they had lost 44-27.

#4 The loss of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is huge who will be out from 10-14 weeks due to a left groin injury wiping out his 2020 season. Raiders back up quarterback Marcus Mariota  did well standing in for Carr last Thursday throwing 226 yards and a touchdown. Mariota kept the Raiders in the game despite the loss.

#5 The Miami Dolphins(8-4) are in Allegiant on Saturday this will be a hard fought game for the Raiders. The Dolphins have won four of their last six games Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in his last game against the New England Patriots threw  for 145 yards and didn’t throw a touchdown but the Dolphins got by the Patriots 22-12. Barbara how do you see this match up?

Headline Sports podcast with Jessica Kwong: Jets showed some defense against Bills but still winless; Did Bucs knock Raiders off their momentum?; plus more

The New York Jets defense was full of surprises last Sunday against the Buffalo Bills holding Buffalo to only 18 points despite losing 18-10 (photo from

On Headline Sports with Jessica:

#1 The New York Jets (0-7) are the laughing stock of the City of New York but yet the Jets head coach Adam Gase says he has a game plan each week. Last Sunday might have been their best game although they lost 18-10 to the Buffalo Bills (5-2) in terms of playing a good defensive game.

#2 The Las Vegas Raiders (3-3) were coming into last Sunday’s game with lots of confidence they were coming off a close seven point loss to the Buffalo on Oct 8th, then the following week Oct 11th they dominated the Kansas City Chiefs (6-1) in KC, had a restful bye week on Sun 18 but got raked at home by the Tampa Bay Bucs (5-2) 45-20 behind Bucs quarterback Tom Brady’s four touchdown afternoon.

#3 The San Francisco 49ers (4-3) who lost two tough games against two teams who were struggling the Miami Dolphins (3-3)  and the Philadelphia Eagles (2-4-1) but came but strong against the Rams (5-2) and Patriots (2-4) for two straight wins. The 49ers face the Seattle Seahawks (5-1) looking at the NFC West that’s a real tough division to win games in as the 49ers head to Seattle this Sunday.

#4 The other day Dallas Cowboys (2-5) owner Jerry Jones was on live radio at 105.5 The Fan and told the host to “shut up a moment and let me answer” after he felt he was being interrupted by the host. How much of that is frustration out of losing quarterback Dak Prescott for the season and having lost to Washington 25-3 last Sunday?

#5 The Houston Texans (5-1) announced on Wednesday that they have closed their training facility due to a positive Covid-19 test from second-year offensive guard Max Scharping . The Texans said that the facility will remain closed for deep cleaning and they will take advantage of the bye week on Nov 1st and test players and get the facility ready for their next game Nov 8th against the Jaguars (1-6) in Jacksonville.
