Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: With standings tightening up Goff, Cal need to throw everything at Oregon this week

by Morris Phillips

BERKELEY–The Cal Bears (5-3) wanted to win games with Utah (7-1), UCLA (6-2), and SC (5-3) and were frustrated in each of those with a loss that now amounts to three straight.  Right now the standings are extremely balanced and highly competitive. You’ve seen players go from the outhouse to the penthouse and back. For Cal this upcoming Oregon (5-3) game presents an opportunity that might be unlike the last three games.

Maybe this week’s game with Oregon will be a shootout and maybe that will benefit them to have a game that’s high scoring and both offenses are having their way. That’s the kind of game they can pull out the one thing they have to worry about Oregon is playing well. The Ducks have already pulled out a couple games in the last couple weeks.

For Cal maybe if they can put the onus on the offense and the offense can kind of carry the defense then maybe the Bears can pull it out. They still have a lot to play for so the Bears are going to be highly motivated to play their best game against Oregon. Cal quarterback Jared Goff missed a few throws he’s had some guys locked up we saw wide out Kenny Lawler catch a few and he was blanked by the SC defender and WR Bryce Treggs has been super consistent and those are the guys who have to get going.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Cougars almost had Cardinal run game figured out but missed FG saves Stanford

by Jerry Feitelberg

PALO ALTO–Last Saturday’s win for the Stanford Cardinal (7-1) over the Washington State Cougars (5-3) was an anxiety ridden game for fans of the Cardinal in the two point 30-28 victory at Pullman. The Cardinal trailed the Cougars 15-3 at one point in the contest as they were down by 12. Another point in the game they were down 22-10 and it was getting later and later in the game.

The Cougars defense had bottled up the running game totally and Cardinal running back Christian McCaffrey did break through for 110 yards but the Cougars had figured out the Stanford running game. Plus the fact that the weather was not in Stanford’s favor of course the Cougars had to play in the same weather.

The weather didn’t seem to effect the Cougars passing game the Cougar quarterback Luke Falk threw for 35-61 for 354 yards and they were moving the ball down on the Cardinal defense all game long. The Cougars seemed to get field position every time with the expectation that the Cougars could hold the Cardinal and it worked for them the most part.

Jerry Feitelberg has more as he reviews the Cardinal and the Cougars close contest at Pullman last Saturday on the podcast at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Media criticism is piling up on CEO York; Kaepernick simply just doesn’t have the line to protect him

by David Zizmor

SANTA CLARA–All the criticism that San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York is receiving from the media is fair. Whatever that was going on behind the scenes and let’s be perfectly honest he has never revealed what went on between him and former head coach Jim Harbaugh, and team general manager Trent Baalke and what led to Harbaugh’s dismissal.

There’s speculation but we know what we saw on the field that Harbaugh got results and gets wins something that’s in short supply in Santa Clara. More importantly the problem with York at the bare minimum is that he’s in this for the money and he really doesn’t care much about the product on the field.

York used the success of Harbaugh as leverage and the stadium in Santa Clara and when the stadium was built he didn’t have much use for Harbaugh because he had the money making machine of the stadium. Once Harbaugh gave him a reason or York created a reason he got rid of him as quick as he could to get a cheaper coach, a cheaper staff, get someone whose more cooperative. York doesn’t care what the product is on the field all he cares about is if the money is rolling in.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, & Commentary: Royals crush Mets head to Big Apple up 2-0

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez and Joe Lami

The Kansas City Royals are leaving little doubt about being the dominating team, the Royals  jumped on the New York Mets with early leads and they did so in big hitting fashion with a 7-1 six run game two victory on Wednesday night. The Royals take the two game lead back to New York and the pressure is all on the Mets to get back into the fray but it’ll take a lot of catching up to do.

Game one took 14 innings on Tuesday night in the Royals 5-4 win on an Eric Hosmer sacrifice fly to right that scored Alcides Escobar from third for the winning run in the 14th. The win set the Royals confidence in motion and they rampaged the Mets in game two with the six run win. Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez had a great outing in game one going six innings, six hits, three runs, three strike outs.

Unfortunately for Volquez he found out about his father passing away in the Dominican Republic after game one. Volquez’ father passed while Volquez was pitching game one at age 63 he died of heart failure. Volquez left immediately for the Dominican right after the game  to be with his family.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The Royals are back in the 2015 World Series this time against the Mets

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The 2015 Kansas City Royals have won the American League pennant for the second consecutive season and this year they will face the New York Mets who won the National League. Just as they were looking for their first World Series title since 1985 and failed against the San Francisco Giants last year, they will be back this year against the New York Mets. They will not have to face Madison Bumgarner, but the Mets rotations is much more formidable that of the Giants.

The first game during the regular season for the Kansas City Royals took place at Angel Stadium in Anaheim against the LA Angels. Good friend and now broadcaster for the Royals television network Rex Hudler told me prior to that first game in Anaheim about his team: “this team is going all the way this year”, well Rex you didn’t lie, the Royals showed again that they are the best team in the American League, and this year I believe a much better team than that 2014 squad. Dayton Moore the General Manager of the Royals deserves all the credit in the world for picking up key pieces for this 2015 club, guys like Kendrys Morales, one of the best designated hitters in baseball this season, all around super player Ben Zobrist and right handed starter Johnny Cueto. In a perfect world the Royals would have loved to face the San Francisco Giants again, and see if Bumgarner could duplicate his sensational 2014 World Series, but it was not to be, as the Giants never made it to the postseason in 2015.

The Royals have the best bullpen in baseball, and under Ned Yost(Manager)they have shortened the game, most teams ask their starter to go six innings, but in the Royals case is just five, since they have the strongest bullpen anchored by closer Wade Davis. The Royals do not strike out much, they are not a power hitting team, like the team they eliminated in six games the Toronto Blue Jays, but the Royals are as resilient of a team as there is in baseball, strong at every position, with great speed and a good bench they can beat anybody and it will not be easy facing the young and powerful pitching staff of the New York Mets this next week for the World Series ring.

Last time the New York Mets went to a World Series was in 2000. I worked that World Series doing play by play with Eduardo Ortega, the Spanish Voice of the San Diego Padres, for LBC(Latino Broadcasting Company) now ESPN Deportes. The Mets that year faced the New York Yankees who took the title, in what was the last Subway Series to this day. I remember it was the first time for me since 1989 when I did not have to travel far to work on both parks, 1989 was the Athletics vs the Giants,I drove to both parks, and in 2000 I stayed at midtown Manhattan and took the Blue Line(Flushing)train to Shea Stadium and the Bronx line to Yankee Stadium.

The Royals will open the series on Tuesday October 27, first two games will be in Kansas City, then the next three at Citi Field in New York, and if it goes to a sixth and seventh games, they will go back to Kansas City. If it goes to a seventh game, the Royals have the home field advantage, but they will not be able to use their great DH Kendrys Morales (.290 22 HR 106 RBI)when they play in New York. Somebody is going to have to sit, a tough decision for manager Ned Yost, Eric Hosmer is their regular first-baseman, and Morales can play first, but he has been their DH all season long.

The New York Mets rotation is as good as there is in the game: deGrom, Syndergard,Harvey,Colón, Niese and their closer is 26 year old Dominican right hander Jeurys Familial, who owns a nasty 93 mph splitter and a super fastball with great rotation. Familia during the regular season worked in relief in 76 games sdinised with a 1.85ERA and saved 43 games for the Metropolitans. Note:

I like the Royals in six games, the Kansas City team is on a mission and they are trying to complete what they began in 2014. The New York Mets are an excellent team with a manager that finally made it to the October Dance in Terry Collins, who is on his first postseason. The Mets swept the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS. The Mets played just about perfect baseball and the lovable Cubs will have to wait until 2016, and they could easily be back with that great young talent. The Mets have more power than the Royals, stronger starting staff, but the Royals have a better bullpen, more speed on the bases, better defense, and I believe it is a better all-around baseball team than the Mets. But in World Series competition, you really never know.

It should be a good one.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Jeremy Kahn: Look for Raiders to get help from their secondary in defending against Chargers, Rivers

by Jeremy Kahn

photo credit google images Charles Woodson Oak Raiders

ALAMEDA–After the bye week the Oakland Raiders have regrouped after two tough loses with Cleveland and Denver and they’re set to face another division opponent again this weekend in San Diego as they get ready for the Chargers. The Raiders are hopeful that they can come back from that two game losing streak.

The Raiders come into Sunday’s game at number 26 in the league in defense and they will face one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL the Chargers Phillip Rivers. The Raiders have to get their secondary going with Charles Woodson and Khalil Mack back there and they’ll just be just fine handling Rivers.

This is going to be a very close game and the Raiders can come out of this one with a win because their playing a lot better and head coach Jack Del Rio says that their more experienced going into this game. Their more experienced on offense and defense going into week seven and the Raiders could come out with a victory.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Niners hoping to regain something back after last Thanksgiving meeting with Seahawks

by David Zizmor

SANTA CLARA–The last time the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers met was on Thanksgiving day 2014 and both teams at that time were 7-4. You might remember the Niners were in a decent position at that point in the season. Then everything fell apart for the Niners and they finished the season 8-8 partly because of some negative momentum from that game where the Seahawks simply dominated them.

The Seahawks embarrassed the Niners in that game defeating them by a score of 19-3 on their home turf on a nationally televised game on Thanksgiving night. It was pretty rough and it caused a downward spiral for the worst things to happen to the 49ers as far as what took place on the field.

This year both teams come into Levis Stadium at 2-4, the Niners are coming off a win against Baltimore however the Ravens are struggling this season and their a lousy team this season and can the 49ers take much away from that victory. The Seahawks are coming off another fourth quarter collapse this time against the Carolina Panthers in Seattle where the Seahawks typically do not lose. It’s the Seahawks and 49ers tonight for another edition of Thursday Night Football in what might turn out to be a very close game.

NHL Podcast with Joe Lami: Hawks Keith out 4-6 weeks; Sharks bitten by injury bug; and the winner of the worst ice in the NHL poll

by Joe Lami

photo credit google images of the Chicago Blackhawks Duncan Keith

SAN JOSE–Taking a look around the NHL headlines the Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith will be out four to six weeks for right knee surgery. Keith will be missed out of that Hawks line up as they will need that experienced defenseman up front. Keith has two assists in six games and his absence will have an impact on the Hawks.

On Monday night Antti Raanta a back up goalie for the New York Rangers proved his worth throwing a shutout against one of the hottest teams in the NHL at the time the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks have been bitten by the injury bug during the last road trip and are missing some players on the top lines. Raanta stopped all of the Sharks 22 shots for the 4-0 shutout.

NHL players polled on which rink in the NHL had the worst ice while a majority of them say Florida. The poll had the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center on the worst ice list. The Kings had to cancel two practices this month due to soft ice. The Kings have been struggling of late and losing their opener to San Jose 5-1 kind of started things in motion.

The Montreal Candiens have the hottest hand in ice hockey right now (7-0), the Habs with net minder Carey Price between the pipes has helped them create some good defense in front and they also beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Monday night. Staying the course with seven wins and no defeats takes a lot of strength, stamina, and endurance. The Habs are getting great offensive help from PK Subban and Max Pacioretty.
