Cardinal men win fifth straight, topple Utes 78-72

Stanford received 22 points from Spencer Jones, Michael Jones scored 15 points off the bench, and the Cardinal extended their men’s basketball winning streak to five with a 78-72 victory over Utah Thursday in Salt Lake City.

Brandon Angel and Michael O’Connell scored 11 points apiece for the Cardinal (10-12 overall, 4-7 Pac-12). O’Connell’s 11 points were a season-best to go along with seven rebounds. Harrison Ingram contributed six assists and made a pair of free throws in the closing minutes to help secure the win. Maxime Raynaud grabbed eight rebounds.

The Cardinal have won four straight conference decisions, with a non-conference win over Chicago State in the middle of their current streak. Stanford made 10 of 18 3-pointers, their best conference shooting effort from behind the arc this season.

Stanford never trailed in the game. They outrebounded the Utes 36-33 and held a 24-20 scoring advantage in the lane.

Utah (15-9 overall, 8-5 Pac-12) tied the game on Marco Anthony’s layup with 6:39 left in the first half. The Cardinal responded with a 22-7 run to build a 46-31 halftime lead.

The Utes battled back, cutting their deficit to 57-54 with 11:55 to play in the second half, but never got closer.

Lazar Stefanovic led Utah with 26 points while hitting 6 of 14 3-pointers. Branden Carlson was next for the Utes with 17 points and seven boards, followed by Rollie Worster with 10 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds..

Stanford’s road trip through the Rockies continues on Sunday, when they play Colorado.
