Sounders edge Earthquakes 1-0

SAN JOSE, Calif-The San Jose Earthquakes are still looking for a recipe to beat the Seattle Sounders with. They suffered a tough 1-0 loss to its conference rival on Wednesday evening at Pay Pal Park.

San Jose had its three-game winning streak snapped. Seattle have won three games in a row and remain unbeaten to start the season . They are also unbeaten in 14 straight matches against San Jose (W8 D6) dating back to September 2015. It’s the longest active unbeaten run by any team against another in MLS.

San Jose (3-2-0) thought they had a penalty shot when an apparent hand ball by Yeimar Gomez was called by referee Baldomero Toledo just inside the box. After a video review, the call was overturned much to the dismay of Quakes head coach Matias Almeyda.

Seattle (4-0-1) drew first blood in the 18th minute. A shot from the right side by Nouhou Tolo was cleared away by Florian Jungwirth. Cristian Roldan collected the rebound and fired a shot top-shelf into the right corner past Quakes goalie JT Marcinkowski.

The Quakes best scoring chance in the first half came at the 37th minute. Eric Remedi centered a ball from just outside the net to Cade Cowell. The 17-year old striker’s one-timer was stopped by with a diving save by Sounders goalie Sefan Frei.

The Earthquakes controlled the possession 56%-44% in the opennig 45 minutes.

San Jose came out of the gate with intent to score even the score in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Two shots attempts in the 54th minute by Remedi and Carlos Fierro had the Sounders on the heels.

Raul Rui Diaz had a three minute span from the 56th minute to the 59th minute where he had two scoring chances to double Seattle’s lead but he second attempt, a chip shot from 10 yard outs sailed over the net.

Almedya substituted captain Chris Wondolowski and Andy Rios in the 65th minute looking for a repeat of the late match magic that Wondo provided last week against Real Salt Lake.

Wondo almost scored the equalizer in the 87th minute when a cross into the middle of the box led to a collision between him and Frei where the veteran goalie came out with the ball secured in his hands.

San Jose had two attempts in the final two minutes of stoppage time after Frei went down with an injury but Seattle’s defense held down the fort to preserve the victory.

GAME NOTES: San Jose had nine corner kicks. Seattle had two.

Since returning from MLS is Back in August, Raúl Ruidíaz has scored 17 goals, six more than any other MLS player (including playoffs).

Sounders left back Jordy Delem was injured with a lower body in the 7th minute and was subbed in by Shane O’Neill.

UP NEXT: San Jose continues its three-game homestand on Saturday 5/15 as they host the Portland Timbers at 7:00pm at Pay Pal Park.
