BURBANK– January 30, 2017. On a beautiful day at the historic Lakeside Golf Country Club, the SCSB (Southern California Sports Broadcasters) Vin Scully was the man of the hour. The SCSB was founded in 1958, the first year the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles with Vin Scully at the mic. This private golf club where the initiation fee is around $85K, is adjacent to Warner Brother’s studios and by the pristine Toluca Lake. This was my first time at this annual event, as I was nominated for the category of Foreign Language Sports play by play (Sportscaster of the Year) for the Los Angeles area. A new category the SCSB began three years ago.

The Guess Entertainer was Tom Dressen, one of the biggest names in show business. The comedian was Frank Sinatra opening act for 14 years, and also has appeared in marquees with Sammy David Jr, Liza Minelli, Smokey Robinson and Natalie Cole, among others. He entertained the crowd of approximately 300 media executives, broadcasters and personalities with a very nice comedy stand up routine.

Vin Scully seemed very emotional as he spoke on his 67 years career, and was very humble. The Legends Award was given to Ed Arnold, a radio man for 32 years in the broadcasting business, including 20 years operating his own company, Gillis Broadcasting Representatives, in Beverly Hills.

Truly enjoyed this first visit to this distinguished event hosted by the SCSB as I recently became an active broadcaster member. The history of this Lakeside Country Club is legendary. Numerous movie stars with memberships are associated with this Club, have included W.C Fields, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra. Some of them used to lived around the corner in Toluca Lake, where there still a community of people in today’s cinematography industry.

Recently elected President of the SCSB Chris Reverts told me this was one of their best events, as he took over from Joe Cala. Tommy Lasorda was next to Vin Scully on the honoree’s table. But the afternoon was dominated by Mr. Vin Scully. Although the Baseball Hall of Fame annually honors a broadcaster and a writer for their lifetime achievement, it’s been suggested that Major League Baseball could also recognize someone each year for their contributions to the craft of storytelling, and there was nobody better than the man from Fordham University (Class of 1949), who last year was given the Medal of Freedom by the President of the United States.
