SAN JOSE–The San Jose Barracuda were edged 3-2 by the Ontario Reign at SAP Center on Friday night.

The Barracuda fell behind 2-0 in the first period and never fully recovered.

The Reign struck first as Sam Herr scored his fourth goal of the season at the 10:21 mark. Shortly after Barclay Goodrow went to the box for interference, Sean Backman added a second goal on the power-play for his seventh of the season to make it 2-0 Reign with 6:51 left in the period.

Despite holding an 11-10 shots advantage over the Reign, the Barracuda trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes.

The Barracuda cut the Reign’s lead in half at 11:06 when Nikita Jevpalovs scored off the rush for his fourth of the season.

Justin Auger scored his eighth of the season to extend the Reign’s lead to 3-1 at 7:11.

Nikolay Goldobin made it a one-goal game with 2:39 left in the period. Goldobin ripped a shot from above the circles on a 5-on-3 for his seventh of the season.

Neither team scored in the third period and the Reign (18-7-6) escaped San Jose with a 3-2 win over the Barracuda and claimed first place in the Pacific Division. Jack Campbell finished with 35 saves in an Ontario victory.

Troy Grosenick made 20 saves in a losing effort for San Jose.

Post game notes: The Barracuda announced that defenceman Mirco Mueller has joined the team on Friday. Mueller who was on the road trip with the Barracuda parent team the San Jose Sharks who played in Edmonton on Tuesday and Calgary on Wednesday. Mueller for the Sharks played in three games in his brief time in the show. Mueller in that time scored a goal and an assist. Mueller can be assured that he will get a call up if the Sharks are looking for depth later this season. More than likely during the stretch drive in March Mueller could look forward to getting more time with the Sharks. With the Sharks Marc Edouard Vlasic back from an injury Mueller has returned to the Barracuda as of Friday.

The Barracuda (17-9-1) return to action Saturday afternoon when they host the Stockton Heat (18-11-3) at 1:30 pm PST on AHL Live and AM 1220 KDOW.
